Anitakbir (Monumental Tomb) - Ankara




Anitakbir is the Mausoleum of Kemal Atatürk who is Turkey's national hero and father of modern Turkey. Atatürk was the founder and first president of the Turkish republic.




The Mausoleum sits on top of Anittepe hill, which dominates the city of Ankara. It is made of marble and is a mixture of both ancient and modern architectural styles. In order to reach the monument you will walk along an avenue lined with 24 stone Hittite lions. The Hittites used lions on the Lion Gate because they were an important symbol to their culture. Lions were viewed as powerful and strong by the ancient people living in Anatolia.

The Ankara Anitakbir Mausoleum houses a lively collection of memorabilia from Atatürk 's life and work, private library, documents, stamps, coins, cars and books. This underground museum shows you a 3-D presentation of the war scenes and documents the life of the leader of the Turkish Republic.
